The HJB Mites do it again!
The Hershey Junior Bears Mites DVHL team won their second tournament of the inaugural season. Leaving their Valentine’s Day dates behind and missing the USA vs. Russia Olympic game, the boys headed to Newark Delaware to compete in the Pond President’s Cup Tournament. The tournament included six 15 minute games in round robin format, the top teams played in a 20 minute semi-final followed by a 20 minute final.
The Bears scored early in the first game and never looked back. The team won all six round robin games, outscoring opponents 38-10. The Bears went on to win the semi-final 9-1 and completed the tournament with a 6-2 victory in the finals.
This was the first travel tournament for the team. The experience included swimming, knee hockey, pizza parties, and staying in a hotel. With all those distractions the coaches were able to keep the boys focused on hockey and work as a team. The team is proud to represent the Hershey Junior Bears organization and look forward to continuing the strong tradition of hockey in Hershey.
Tournament highlights: Team record 8-0; Scored 53 goals in 140 minutes of game time, allowing only 13 goals; All team members recorded points; Never trailed in any game; Registered one shutout
Team members: Front L-R: David Hollinger, Mason Lutz, Brian Murtagh, Brad Gerrish, Ethan Coots, Owen Sensenig Back L-R: Leland Kiely, Zach Valania, Gavin Clark Coaches L-R: Jamie Clark, Dave Hollinger, Andrew Murtagh (missing from photo, coach Oliver Kiely)
PeeWee A 1 Team Wins In Canada
Valentine's weekend was a little bit sweeter for the Hershey Jr. Bears Pee Wee A hockey moms -- as their boys of winter (age 11/12) -- captured the Can-Am Hockey Challenge Cup on February 16th in Montreal, QB. With several players fighting colds the team battled hard, then left a five-hundred mile long trail of gold on the white snowy roads back to Pennsylvania.
With an opening 4-1 win against the Parkway Rebels (West Roxbury/Boston) the boys began the tournament with a Bears roar and never looked back.
On Saturday, the boys defeated their Canadian neighbors TWICE, dispatching both the Seigneurs De Soulanges (2-1) and Char-Lan Rebels (3-2) putting the Bears up 3-0, and into the Championship Game on Sunday against the Parkway Rebels.
Losing 1-0 early, the Bears recorded 7 straight goals with excellent teamwork and won 7-2 in convincing fashion, earning the Gold Medal and making the nine-hour bus ride home a bit more enjoyable.

Squirt B Champions!
The Hershey Jr Bears Squirt B team headed NE on Saturday January 18 for the Lehigh Valley Fire and Ice tournament. Coach Scott Cranston’s crew was battling illness and tough competetion throughout the Martin Luthern King Holiday weekend. With only 10 skaters and a goalie, the HJB gutted out a 2-1 win over the host Lehigh Valley Flames to start the tournament off. Later in the day versus the Quakers, the HJB found themselves down 2-0 before rattling off 4 straight goals to take a 4-2 lead. The Bears started to tire and the Quakers battled back to tie the score 4-4 midway through the 3rd period before the HJB scored with under a minute to go to take game 2 of the tournament 5-4. The HJB would finish round robin play with a convincing 5-1 win over the Hatfield Ice Dogs on Sunday, earning the most points in their grouping and punching their ticket to the Championship game. The Championship game on MLK day was an “edge of your seat” battle throughout. The HJB came out slow and the Ice Dogs seeking revenge came out strong. The Ice Dogs outshot the Bears 6-0 and outscored them 1-0 in the first period of play. Both defenses clamped down in the second period as both teams struggled to get shots. The Championship game would go to the 3rd period with the Ice Dogs up 1-0. The HJB began to wear down the gritty Dogs and the chances started to come in the 3rd period. The HJB finally tied the score 1-1 early in the 3rd period. Both teams had good chances throughout the rest of the period but the goalies held serve to force overtime. It only took the Bears 41 seconds in the “do or die” extra period to notch the game winner and etch their names on the Lehigh Valley Fire and Ice tournament Squirt B Cup.
